I thoroughly enjoyed this book. With great images, humor, and honesty, the author painted a picture of what it was like growing up in Canada in his youth, his journey through stages of his spirituality, conflicts about his calling, and poignant words about the hills and valleys of his life. His words are comforting, inclusive, and healing for people of all faiths. I rationed reading the chapters, always an indication of a good book—one you don’t want to end. Well done!Product details

I laughed out loud in delight, I cried tears in grief, and sometimes did both within the same chapter. Hoffman is a master story teller with this lovely nonlinear look at some of the highs and lows and interesting parts of his life. It feels as honest, authentic, and fresh as an Anne Lamott book. This is not a book that gives the reader exact answers regarding Christian faith, but it is full of charming, self-deprecating humor, and I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys non-fiction writing.
Beautifully written. Engaging, honest and thoughtful. A life well-lived; a deep faith explored with integrity; past generations and present friends and family along the path of life appreciated. This book was a pleasure to read. The cover of the book is perfect, given that Hoffman enthusiastically climbed Half Dome 28 times!
The author of this book was the head pastor of the church that I belong to . For twelve years I listened to his inspirational, insightful, scholarly, and hilariously humorous sermons. This book is as richly worthwhile and entertaining as his sermons. I was interested to read about Hoffman's ancestors, his family, childhood, youth, and the development of his beliefs and of his career. One of my favorite parts of the book was the account of how this kind, gentle-spoken, scholarly clergyman dealt with a thief and with a con-artist. I also loved his sublime description of one of his twenty-eight climbs to the top of Half Dome, Yosemite. Rev. Hoffman's teachings help to build a faith that survives Mystery, uncertainty, and the sorrows of life.
Charles Hoffman served for 15 years at my home church as its pastor and I was fortunate to regularly hear his wonderful, inspiring sermons. His very readable, engaging book is a fascinating chronicle of his family history and how he arrived at the choice to be a minister. Charles' signature gift for captivating storytelling, laced with both depth and humor, infuses this book about one man's spiritual journey from reluctance to deep commitment to his faith and work as a preacher. Charles writes and teaches in a gentle, candid, often poetic way, leaving room for the very human tendencies to question, and even on occasion, doubt one's own theology. Written in a personal, conversational style, this is a book that deals with subjects of family, purpose, loss, wisdom, faith, perseverance, and risk. I am glad that Charles ultimately heeded the call to ministry and that he also listened to the prompting from within which led to his writing this excellent book.
So very much research has gone in to this book. I appreciated then in-depth history.

A beautiful portrait of a life, a faith, and a journey. Not only the story of one’s soul’s journey to health and healing, but of the numerous lives that have been touched along the way. Stories like this, featuring the struggle to find meaning and a viable, genuine relationship with God and God’s world, are especially important in this age of black and white religious convictions. A lovely statement saying “yes!” to life and to God.
